April 2011 Selection

Jem Weiss is the middle child of a remarkably wonderful family.  Her father is a famous author, her mother a protestant "Goddess" and she has 4 siblings who are also super gifted kids that can quote Shakespeare and Dickens.  The book chronicles her childhood in England and coming of age in Canada.  Jem leads an inward life which focuses on her truly unknowable mother, and experiences are all related to through books and movies.

In the shadow World War II, Beth Weeks is coming of age.  Living in a rural community in British Columbia, life for Beth rotates around traditional farming activities, like milking cows, preserving and harvesting.  Life changes when Beth's father is attacked by a grizzly bear, and becomes an aggressive and paranoid person, who begins to pursue his daughter at night.  The neighbouring  Reserve community is filled with unstable people, and magical realism enters with shape shifting men creating an real as well as an imagined threat.
